With so much pressure to do a little song and dance, even the judge cannot resist being drawn into the spotlight. The Times reported that Judge Lance Ito has been trying out some of his new improv stuff on all the new publicity he's been getting. In his latest bon mot to potential jurors, the judge suggested that they "distract themselves from O.J. news by watching "The Simpsons'--the TV show, I mean." He probably shouldn't quit his day job. He should also realize that there are two TV shows by that name, and that he stars...
...MUCH CAN IT TAKE? O.J. Simpson's reeling defense suffered another one-two punch: Judge Lance Ito today rejected its motion to throw out evidence taken from Simpson's Ford Bronco during police searches. The Bronco is a virtual treasure trove for the prosecution: Police found bloodstains on its door and interior, an order slip for two knives, a shovel that investigators believe may have been used to bury evidence, and golf shoes they want to compare with shoe prints at the murder scene...
Judge Lance Ito dismissed attempts by O.J. Simpson attorneys to suppress evidence and testimony in the Simpson case, another setback in a line of setbacks for the defense team. Defense attorney Gerald Uelmen said DNA tests done on blood found on O.J.'s driveway invaded his client's privacy. Uelmen claimed police should have obtained a search warrant before collecting the samples. Ito called the argument "interesting and novel" -- but unsupported...
With jury selection in the O.J. Simpson murder case set to begin on Monday, prosecutors and defense attorneys spent their last week of pretrial hearings arguing over the admissibility of critical evidence seized by police at Simpson's estate. Judge Lance Ito ruled in favor of the prosecution on the vast majority of the disputed evidence. He also attacked what he called "outrageous" and "incorrect" reporting on the case and threatened to kick TV cameras out of the courtroom...
Judge Lance Ito formally proposed an electronic media blackout of the O.J. Simpson trial today. The no-nonsense jurist said that media companies had to give him reasons why he should not issue an order to that effect in a hearing on November 7. Ito has been angry at television reporters since a KNBC-TV report last week that linked Nicole Simpson's blood to that found on O.J.'s socks. Ito called the story inaccurate, and was infuriated when the station repeated it the following day. The TV outlet has since recanted much of its story...
