...exhibit illuminates a murky period in Egyptian history that curator Rita Freed describes as having "all the elements of a soap opera." When Amenhotep IV, as he was originally called, ascended the throne in 1353 B.C., Egypt was a flourishing empire, at peace with its neighbors. Yet there were troubling signs. His father Amenhotep III had already challenged the powerful priesthood by proclaiming the sun god Aten as foremost among Egyptian deities and himself as his living incarnation...

...than $4 million in 1998. Among its other paid advocates: former Senator Dennis DeConcini; former Watergate assistant special prosecutor Richard Ben-Veniste; and Thomas Parry, former chief of staff for Senator Orrin Hatch, who heads the Judiciary Committee that considers such requests. Hatch has used Schering-Plough's Gulfstream IV jet five times this year for his presidential campaign, reimbursing the company at first-class-airfare rates, as permitted...

Maybe the meeting at the Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino is not destined to be remembered along with Yalta and Potsdam as one of history's great summits. They weren't even planning to invite Hemings' 33 known descendants to the reunion until Lucian Truscott IV--a writer who seems to have inherited more of Jefferson's spirit than the rest of the Monticello Association put together--threatened to show up with a gang of black cousins and disrupt the entire affair...

...much chattier. Even the opening is talky. "Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic," the now familiar trapezoidal text-crawl tells us. "The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems is in dispute." Immediately one is perplexed. A summary made sense in the earlier films; they were episodes IV, V and VI in the grand fable, and as continuations of an initially untold saga, they required some elucidation. But what's the need for back-story text in a tale that is just beginning? Can it be that Lucas was unable to dramatize these events, so he put them...
