Antic Meet, set to squeaking, creaking, honking music conducted by Composer Cage himself, was mostly satirical-a spoof of social conventions, sports, the modern dance itself. At one point Cunningham pulled on and off a multisleeved sweater in a pointed jab at Martha Graham's fondness for dressing and undressing while dancing. At another he appeared in white coveralls and went through a marvelously loose-limbed parody of vaudeville-style dancing, with broad suggestions of Fred Astaire. The piece contained few outright ballet laughs, but it was distinguished by the clean, sculptural style that is the mark of Cunningham...
...Wash board. Looking like a small lady Martian in her white crash helmet and goggles, New Hampshire's round-cheeked, chunky Penny Pitou, 21, was the first skier to jab her poles into the snow and set off. Penny plummeted through the schuss, hit the bump at such a speed that she was forced to the washboard surface on the outside of the turn. For one frantic second, she tottered on one ski, then recovered control to flash home...
Amid the poetry and razzmatazz, there were some discordant, familiar old notes. Massachusetts' John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Minnesota's Hubert Horatio Humphrey, the Democrats' two out-in-the-open candidates, began to jab the Republicans-and each other-a little harder. In Santa Ana, Calif., hard by Nixon's home town, Humphrey said the Vice President would be a "negative, nogo, go-slow, not-now, veto type of executive." At a rally of the amateur-politico California Democratic Council in Fresno, Kennedy warned that the party "would be committing a grave error if it ever tried...
...horror story as a bubbly champagne farce. For at least two-thirds of the film, the thick-necked Schlotbarone bounce about hilariously, like a chorus line of caricature capitalists. In fact, the weakness of the picture as social satire is that too often it tickles where it ought to jab. Only in the last reel does the customer stop giggling, as in the bottom of the champagne glass he suddenly sees something hard to swallow. The moviemakers make him swallow it anyway. Oddly enough, Germans have not shrunk from the experience. Rosemary is the second most popular picture made...
...Take-Off. At the bell in Yankee Stadium last week, the jug-eared, roundheaded Johansson pawed tentatively with a left jab, kept his right cocked to launch the big punch. He did not seem too heavily muscled, but the tip-off of his power came late in the first round when he threw his very first right hand. Though it was a glancing blow, the 182-lb. Patterson blinked...
