Last week Ginsburg was abruptly replaced by Jacob Stein and Plato Cacheris, two specialists in Washington cunning and its rules of discretion. It was probably no accident that when the two men were introduced to the press, with Lewinsky beaming confidently behind them, Stein was wearing a necktie in place of his trademark bow. Ginsburg favored bow ties too. The new guys want to signal a new approach. Stein is bookish and quiet, an intellectual who files intricately thought-out but simply expressed motions. Cacheris is a backslapper who gets along well with prosecutors. Don't expect them to operate...
...recently re-released, the character Rizzo "says something about 'sloppy seconds,' you know, the fact that a guy wouldn't want to do it with a girl who had just done it with another guy. There's also another point where they talk about condoms. Both Jacob and Joel wanted an explanation, so I provided it for them...
...town where lawyers are pressed from cookie cutters, stuffed into gray suits and sent off to work in colorless law factories, Jacob Stein is a rarity--he's a character. He takes midday literary breaks in his antiques-strewn office to leaf through 18th-century British classics. He wears dapper chalk-striped suits and two-toned shoes to court. And he has been known to send the detachable collars and cuffs from his hand-tailored shirts to London for laundering...

("My client is a fool, an ass, a boor!" he once thundered. "But he is not a cold-blooded strangler.") If he and Jacob Stein fail to win immunity for Lewinsky and she ends up in court, the two will probably split the role of courtroom defender--with Cacheris coming off more the showman. Even on the tennis court, he's the exhibitionist of the pair. "He wears white ducks, and I wear shorts...
WASHINGTON: We have contact. Monica Lewinsky's new lawyers, it emerged late Wednesday, have already made overtures to Ken Starr's office -- and an immunity deal for the former intern may not be far behind. Plato Cacheris and Jacob Stein paid the prosecutor a courtesy call hours before the news broke that Lewinsky had hired them, ostensibly to make a clean break with the Ginsburg regime. Starr, it seems, was pleased with the tribute. Where immunity was concerned, his spokesman said, "the door is open...
