The daughter of a mayor from the central Philippines, Yorac spent three months in jail in 1972 during Ferdinand Marcos' oppressive rule, emerging from prison to defend victims of government-ordered brutality. Yorac later served as head of President Corazon Aquino's Human Rights Commission and the Presidential Commission on Good Government, which was charged with recovering Marcos' hidden wealth after he was exiled.
