There's a lot of humor in the comic bits, not just in the word-play, but also in the hammy mugging of Stephen Kolzak and Paul Jackel as Jake and Bob. And when the covering starts to wear thin, there's also considerable potential for pathos. Ableman doesn't have enough control over his material to bring it off, though, and some clumsy inconsistencies and bad writing keep the play at the level of melodrama...

Maybe he milked a few extra votes for Jake Garn in Utah, pulling him into the Senate. It could be that the big black woman he swung round the dance floor in Portland translated the warm glow into some kind of G.O.P. vote. He might have picked up a jock or two in Portland's Coliseum. Then again he might have lost a million times that many ballots for the Grand Old Party by reminding people that he gave the pardon to Richard Nixon, by airlifting the presidential extravaganza all over the country while sugar...
...Jake isn't too far wrong. Dartmouth is 1-1 in Ivy play, and a loss to the Crimson today would sound the death knell for any Green hopes of a sixth straight title...
Crimson coach Joe Restic is a nice guy, adding two points to his team. Dartmouth mentor Jake Crouthamel may be a good guy too, but I don't know him. No points there...
