...Inside his air-conditioned office, looking out on the street where the drama plays out, Arafat Jamal, the senior regional officer for the UNHCR, tells me that in one week, 400,000 people in Lebanon - 10% of the country's population - have been displaced. The people in the street below him will not be taken out of the country, he said, but instead moved to "safe havens" in schools in the mountains and near Tripoli in the north. He looks tired, and he should be; he's incredibly short-staffed at the moment because the Lebanese employees of the UNHCR...
...this was the case even before the events of June 8, when an Israeli air strike killed Jamal Abu Samhadana, a leading militant in Gaza, and the next day, when seven Palestinian civilians were killed and more than 30 wounded by an explosion while they picnicked on the beach near Beit Lahiya. The aftermath of the beach explosion was filmed by a local cameraman, whose pictures of a young girl wailing for her fatally wounded relatives generated intense scrutiny. The source of the beach blast is being fiercely-debated - Palestinians say it was an incoming Israeli artillery shell...
What prompted Hamas' move? First, Jamal Abu Samhadana, head of a Gaza security force, was assassinated in an Israeli missile strike. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told TIME: "Hamas cannot stand idly by while the Israeli army kills women and children...
...Some new details emerging about the suspects are worrying in that respect. Wajid Khan, a Muslim Member of Parliament, says he was invited to speak last year at a mosque in the suburb of Mississauga, where several of the young men now charged were members. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, the oldest of those charged, was a volunteer in the mosque and introduced Khan, in the process accusing Canadian soldiers of going to Afghanistan to rape Muslim women. Khan says he defended the Canadian military, and many of the people gathered were also offended by Jamal?s comments But his story...
...late in the morning at the Wadi al-Salaam cemetery by the time Sheik Jamal and his volunteers have completed their grim mission. The 72 bodies have been sprayed with disinfectant, wrapped in shrouds and buried. Sheik Jamal thanks the gravediggers, shaking their hands. "I will be in touch," he says. "I'll call and let you know how many [graves] we need next week." Stretching out into the desert, the graveyard is unlikely to run out of space. And since the killings of Iraqis show no sign of slowing, Sheik Jamal will not run out of bodies either...
