...neckties, and ordering up a supply of commemorative beer steins decorated with a picture of Aaron that will sell for about $7.50 to fans who witness the historic home runs, the Braves administration spent the winter worrying about crowd control. More than 50,000 fans are expected to jam Atlanta Stadium for games until Aaron breaks the record. They will have plenty of incentive to throttle their neighbor to catch home run No. 715: the latest price offered for the ball is $25,000, put up by an anonymous fan in Venezuela...
Human Ghosts. All the backstage sergeants have their favorite nightmares. Merrill's personal fear is that the five schooners that must tilt and collapse when a wind machine blows at the beginning of the opera will jam some night and halt the entire production. Another perilous moment occurs in the Royal Hunt and Storm scene in the second act. Four human ghosts must descend from 60 feet in the air into the audience's vision, while the giant turntable is about to spin forward, all without disclosing the projection equipment. Any electrical trouble then would end the evening...
Changes consists of "a variety of original improvisations" and three one-act plays, one of which is apparently a jam session by local jazzmen. The other two are The Jewish Wife, which I gather is one of Bertolt Brecht's less worthwhile plays, and Michael McClure's The Cherub, which is evidently about someone called The Bed and described only as a sixty-two-year-old actress who must be seen. I have little or no idea what this means. Thursdays (cheaper), Fridays and Saturdays, 8 p.m. at Theater Two, 196 Broadway near Kendall Square...
...ball park glory came, finally, during the last homestand I could attend, a 16-game August-September series. The Phillies, in an unexpected late-season awakening, were near the top of their division. Philadelphia fans dropped all pre-season Eagles discussions and stampeded to the park. Under these jam-packed conditions, with 90 degree heat, my coke business thrived. I broke two records on consecutive nights, first with a sale of 1200 cokes, then with one sale of 240 cokes to a Lions Club leader who shared his order with 500 parched Cub Scouts...
...play is like the jam-session of a community: each character playing out his own theme, sometimes getting it on with other players, but always reverting back to the whole group, which, together, sings the main score, "Harlem in the Evening." At times the rhythm is off, the shifts just too coarse. When a love song, "Golden Girl," leads into a bittersweet fantasy of death (originally a one-act play, Soul Gone Home) the movement is contrived. During the entire song a mother can be seen in the dimly-lit background greiving over her son's body. While this accomodates...
