Usage:

...rather too strenuously titled HBO film -- is intended to be a spoof of TV's ubiquitous true-crime movies. The joke is that it's more believable than most of the ripped-from-the-headlines docudramas it pokes fun at. Director Michael Ritchie (Smile, The Candidate) and screenwriter Jane Anderson (The Baby Dance) don't lampoon the genre; they merely strip it of the solemn sensationalism that TV usually lavishes on these seedy tales. ...Lesson Before Dying is, like Ernest Gaines' best-known novel, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, set in rural Louisiana. The year is 1948, and the particulars have a familiar ring. A young, black male is convicted of murder and sentenced to death on inconclusive evidence. The youth, called Jefferson, had the bad luck to be in a white man's store at the same time that two acquaintances attempted a robbery. They shoot the owner, but not before he fires effectively at them. Left with three dead men on the floor, Jefferson panics and helps himself to a bottle...

...Director Jane Nichols, from the American Repertory Theatre, shows a sure hand in keeping up the play's pace and controlling the sometimes frenetic energy. Although some comic moments blow by too quickly to appreciate, the timing is generally impressive and the endless entrances and exits are surprisingly well-synchronized.
