...Educating Afghan Girls Re your story on efforts to persuade Afghan parents to send their daughters to school: As a teenager, I was deeply moved by 12-year-old Lida Ahmadyar's resolve to be a doctor [Jan. 28]. I am distressed that children in the developed world seem to take school for granted and that some show little interest in studying. While we spend our time playing with our gadgets, perhaps we should think about children like Lida in other regions of the world. Jackie Lai Yan-ki, Sai Kung, Hong Kong...

...Drawing the Line Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee runner, should be allowed to compete in the Beijing Olympics with his Cheetahs prosthetics [Jan. 28]. But he should be allowed to do so with one proviso: if he crosses the finish line first, he should be presented with a special award or commendation. But the gold medal should still go to the fastest runner on two feet. Ivan C. Jones, Greeneville, Tennessee...

...Sacred Harp for Health Re "Give Me That Old-Time Singing" [Jan. 28]: during my four years as a Sacred Harp singer, I discovered that beginners enjoy a warm welcome and excellent coaching. Experienced singers get a break from worrying about dynamics and tone quality. Everyone receives choral singing's documented benefits of stress reduction, lowered blood pressure and enhanced immunity. Best of all, we have an opportunity to create beautiful music that sometimes seems like a direct communication from the past to the present. Thanks for highlighting this life-affirming pursuit. Having helped build or repair 27 schools in north-central Afghanistan over the past six years, I can verify that education is a building block to eliminating poverty, oppression and extremism [Jan. 28]. I have seen remarkable social, political and economic changes in the more than 20,000 children my project represents, particularly the girls. They are marrying later and having fewer offspring. Children are learning much needed life skills. More important, there is now hope. Despite staggering odds, kids are thinking about the future. There is new respect for the rule of law and support for democracy. Children...

...planning an entire eco-sensitive neighborhood development called Ever Vail. At 9.5 acres (4 hectares), it will be the largest resort in the U.S. certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and will join other LEED-approved resorts like the Hotel Terra Jackson Hole, which opened on Jan. 29 in Wyoming. Positioned on the mountain to make the best use of natural light and save electricity, the Terra also uses 34% less water than traditional resorts and has begun a pilot program for disposing food waste, which is important in a mountain climate in which food scraps...
