...boldest attacks on the Afghan capital since Hamid Karzai became President, insurgents laid siege to several areas of Kabul on Jan. 18. Suicide bombers blew themselves up near Karzai's palace and the Education Ministry, while another three of the seven perpetrators took over a shopping complex across from the Justice Ministry. All the attackers were killed, as were two civilians and three members of the Afghan security forces. At least 70 people were wounded. The incident--a reminder of the Taliban's ability to strike at the shaky Afghan government--came as Kabul mulled a program aimed at persuading...
...last thing Haiti needed. A 6.1-magnitude aftershock struck the country shortly after 6 a.m. on Jan. 20, barely a week after the capital Port-au-Prince was flattened by a massive earthquake that killed as many as 200,000 and left 1.5 million homeless. Aid groups fear that the tremor--the worst of the dozens of aftershocks that have hit Haiti since the quake--could hinder the delivery of food and water. About 4,000 additional U.S. troops have been pledged to Haiti to help deliver aid, bringing the total...
Billionaire Sebastián Piñera won Chile's election on Jan. 17, making him the first conservative elected President in more than half a century. Piñera edged out Eduardo Frei, the center-left former President, who was backed by the widely popular outgoing President, Michelle Bachelet. Piñera won almost 52% of the vote, breaking the center left's hold on the office, which began after Augusto Pinochet's brutal dictatorship ended in 1990. Analysts attributed the result to Frei's lackluster campaign and Piñera's ability to separate himself from the legacy of Pinochet's rule...
Whoever leads Ukraine next, it won't be pro-Western President Viktor Yushchenko, who placed fifth in the nation's Jan. 17 elections. Since coming to power in 2005, Yushchenko has clashed with Russia and angered Ukrainians by failing to make good on his promises of economic reform. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her predecessor Viktor Yanukovych--both seen as more Moscow-friendly--were the top vote getters, prompting Russia to unfreeze ties with the former Soviet republic. The two will face each other in a Feb. 7 runoff...
...Though it relinquished the Falklands when it surrendered to the British to end a 1982 war, Argentina has consistently asserted sovereignty over the South Atlantic archipelago. In December, the Argentine Congress passed a law that recognized the disputed territory as part of its Tierra del Fuego province. On Jan. 18 the British government rejected the gambit, saying there is "no doubt" that Britain remains the islands' rightful owner. Recent indications that there could be oil reserves surrounding the territory may have sparked the attempted landgrab...
