While deeply impressed by the renowned name of Hispano-Suiza, I take leave, nevertheless, to raise an eyebrow at TIME'S Jan. 11 resume of Spain's current dilemma. Granted tongue-in-cheek journalism applied to stories such as Mussolini's Jew-baiting in the same issue is more effective than open condemnation. However, applied in the wrong place, as TIME did very obviously in its yarn on the use of "moteur canon" (i.e., hollow propeller shafts hurling machine gun bullets or small calibre shells) in aerial warfare, it is little more than an exhibition of Munchausen...

...admitted to the Presidential presence and given the benefit of a pontifical discussion of the issue by the man most interested. Mr. Krock managed to get one paragraph for quasi-direct quotation ("the President this week has been saying to his friends"): "When I retire to private life on Jan. 20, 1941, I do not want to leave the country in the condition Buchanan left it to Lincoln.-If I cannot, in the brief time given me to attack its deep and disturbing problems, solve those problems, I hope at least to have moved them well...

It was also Lord Nuffield who started off the Oxford Appeal in Britain with $500,000. The Cecil Rhodes Trustees promptly pledged another...

Thus does Marching Song deal with a sit-down strike in an automobile town called Brimmerton. As will be evident from the partial inventory above of its dramatic materials, it is not a hastily concocted case history of the General Motors strike in Flint (TIME, Jan. 11 et seq.). It is a proletarian fairy tale in unrelieved black & white. Viewed from within its own wonderland it is vivid enough to enlist sympathy for the good fairies in their struggles against the hobgoblins. The play's nightmarish atmosphere is enhanced by Howard Bay's vast, sombre setting which represents...

...Called for this week was a conference between Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau, Chairman James McCauley Landis of SEC and Chairman Marriner Stoddard Eccles of the Federal Reserve Board to study ways & means of discouraging investment of foreign funds in the U. S. With its gold sterilization program (TIME, Jan. 4), the Treasury is now keeping the incoming metal from inflating the credit base. But the huge volume of investments is itself a threat to U. S. stability, particularly in case of war when the money might be suddenly withdrawn. "The constant inflow of foreign capital is a source...
