But after his first hell-for-leather raids on the Jap islands - the Gilberts and Marshalls, Wake and Marcus - his force missed the Battle of the Coral Sea by hours. Halsey went back to Pearl Harbor on May 26, 1942, suffering from a skin disease which laid him up for weeks. He missed the Battle of Midway, decisive engagement...
