When war came to the Pacific in 1941, Halsey, a vice admiral and commander of aircraft carriers, Pacific Fleet, was running task, forces of big ships as though they were destroyer divisions: the emphasis was on speed and maneuver. But after his first hell-for-leather raids on the Jap islands - the Gilberts and Marshalls, Wake and Marcus - his force missed the Battle of the Coral Sea by hours.
