...from! Wilson sells not only Hammers but also SledgeHammers. And what of the Head and the Prince? In the years since we bought our racquets, tennis gear has evolved as human beings will over the millenniums: heads are larger, necks longer and body weight is lighter. Meanwhile high- tech jargon is used to justify racquet prices, which have zoomed to the $175-$300 range. I sought guidance from Howard Brody, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert in tennis physics...
Mutual funds are billed as an easy way to play the stock market, but the prospectuses are packed with confusing jargon. Starting this month, funds are allowed to send potential investors a simplified "profile" that lays out their fees, risks and performance in plain English. ...Simpson's infamous life-style serves as an apt metaphor for the overindulgent '80s and '90s, Biskind's book delivers what's known in screenwriting jargon as the backstory--the preamble sparked when Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider caught fire. While innocuous enough, the prevelance (and thus the privileging) of heterosexual behavior and the attendant invisibility of homosexuality legitimizes a climate of homophobia. If, on the other hand, Oppenheim is offended solely by the word "vulva...
...Susquehanna River. Inside the brightly lit control room of Metropolitan Edison's Unit 2, technicians on the lobster shift one night last week faced a tranquil, even boring watch. Suddenly, at 4 a.m., alarm lights blinked red on their instrument panels. A siren whooped a warning. In the understated jargon of the nuclear power industry, an "event" had occurred. In plain English, it was the beginning of the worst accident in the history of U.S. nuclear power production, and of a long, often confused nightmare that threw the future of the nuclear industry into question...
