...works like this: Across the post-Big Bang universe, collections of Higgs bosons make up a pervasive Higgs field - which is theoretically where particles get mass. Moving particles through a Higgs field is like pulling a weightless pearl necklace through a jar of honey, except imagine that the honey is everywhere and the interaction is continuous. Some particles, such as photons, which are weightless particles of light, are able to cut through the sticky Higgs field without picking up mass. Other particles get bogged down, accumulating mass and becoming very heavy. Which is to say that even though the universe...

...Third, Bubo. C'mon, guys, this whistling clockwork owl was one of Harryhausen's lesser concoctions. Offering comic relief to the 1981 film's solemnity, Bubo was a figure of George Lucas-like whimsy: the echo of R2D2, precursor to Jar Jar Binks. At the end, a wandering poet (Burgess Meredith) says that Perseus' achievements might inspire him to write a play, and when Bubo starts clucking he says comfortingly, "Oh, don't worry, I won't leave you out." The new movie's screenwriters, Travis Beacham, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, took that as a cue to usher Bubo...

...constantly. Oplev's movie whisks key characters right out of the plot, either by death or omission. Much of the journalistic intrigue is gone (sadly, since presumably this was an element precious to Larsson, who like Blomkvist was a financial journalist before his death in 2004.) The changes may jar those viewers well-versed in Larsson's work, but because of them Oplev is able to tease more thrills out of the material than they might expect. Blomkvist twice stumbles unwittingly into suspenseful situations involving spooky houses and while we're annoyed that he's less savvy than...

...time when every one of its main rivals has repaid its obligations to Uncle Sam, Citi still has its hands deep in the government-aid cookie jar. Uncle Sam owns more of Citigroup than any other bank. Currently, the government holds 7.7 billion shares of Citi's stock - a stake the government got last year by converting a portion of its Citi preferred shares. That makes Uncle Sam the bank's largest shareholder, with about 27% of Citi's outstanding shares, valued at some $26 billion. That's about seven times the $3.5 billion the government has lent SunTrust Bank...

...mass-production side,] it amped up because there's a market for it in pockets of the country where people's desire to drink outweighs its availability. There's this culture of nip joints where you walk in, buy a baby-food jar of moonshine for a buck, and it's 3 oz. The guy next to you, maybe he mowed someone's lawn and he's got a few extra dollars, so he buys you another one. You can smoke inside, you can gamble on checkers, and you can smoke a joint if you want to. The illegality continues...
