...relatives--the cranky uncles, the chain-smoking aunt in Boca Raton who regales a friend on the phone with tales of her daughter's lesbian wedding--and enough one-liners and physical business to keep his fans happy. But he's also paying tribute to his family, especially his jazz-loving father (who produced concerts by such greats as Billie Holiday), and working out some unresolved guilt (over the fight they had about chemistry homework the night his father died). Written in part with Alan Zweibel and directed by Des McAnuff, 700 Sundays doesn't escape sentimentality...
...what it is, and Golightly (which is, in fact, her real name) hits exactly the mark she shoots for. The disc is a blend of American roots music, with all the weight that it suggests: it channels jazz, country and blues with a spare post-electric (but pre-rock and roll) feel. The disc features omnipresent Silvertone-esque guitars channeled through what sounds like fuzzy vintage Fender Frontman amps. With a couple of exceptions, the songs are written by Golightly herself but sound like they could have come from the likes of Patsy Cline, Hank Williams or Loretta Lynn...
Clapping, singing and dancing brought Memorial Church to life this weekend thanks to the Kuumba Singers—a description as fitting for the reaction of the audience as the singers’ performance.
