When Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana confessed to "a very serious sin" on Monday night, Debra Jean Palfrey was not about to forgive him. Sin is one thing; but Palfrey believes Vitter - a proponent of the "sanctity of marriage" - should fess up if that sin was a crime as well. After all, she notes, prostitution is a legal offense for both purveyor and consumer. And as the so-called "D.C. Madam" whose escort service Vitter says he used, Palfrey says the agency she ran was merely one-half of the alleged equation. "Why am I the only person being prosecuted...
...museum show comprised over 300 pieces - including a white lace dress that Valentino designed while working as a 19-year-old assistant to the Paris couturier Jean Desses - displayed as if in a pagan ritual, culminating at an ancient altar. The first room, all elaborately beaded dresses and coats, suggested the "seed" of an idea. That progressed to a "Peace" dress - white, with the word peace embroidered all over it - which Valentino had designed during the Gulf War. Two dozen white dresses are arranged as if marching toward the altar, surrounded by a "chorus" of dresses in the designer...
Appearing as an expert witness against "Millennium Bomber" Ahmed Ressam in March 2001, France's trail-blazing counter-terrorism investigator Jean-Louis Bruguiere left at least one court official somewhat confused. The court official asked him to restate the last name of this "Al" person the Frenchman cited as being central to the global plot of which Ressam's planned attack on Los Angeles International Airport had been part. Bruguiere patiently explained that "al Qaeda" was an organization seeking a global federation of furtive extremists to wage jihad on the West. Less than seven months later, as the lessons...
...Mogel wasn't the only person to discover delay discrepancies. Rep. Jean Schmidt, a Republican from Ohio, did some digging of her own after being delayed on an airport tarmac for two hours in January. Schmidt, who sits on the House Infrastructure and Transportation Committee, was also shocked to find the loophole. In June, she introduced a bill that would require the BTS to record tarmac delays of all flights, regardless of returns to the gate, diversions or cancellations. "I think we need to know what the true picture is of these delays, because it could be underreported...
...pink confection that looked right out of a Fragonard, Amber Valetta in pale blue, a portrait of Renoir. Each dress more elaborate and evocative than the first. Galliano called it a Bal des Artistes, in keeping with Dior's great love of art and his friendships with artists like Jean Cocteau. For Galliano, it was also a celebration of his 10 years at Dior and a tribute to his great friend and colleague at Dior, Steven Robinson, who passed away earlier this spring...
