Romain Rolland wrote an epic about an individual (Jean Christophe); John Galsworthy wrote one about a family (The Forsyte Saga); but Jules Romains' magnum opus will seek comparison with an earlier, more comprehensive epic: La Comedie Humaine of Honoré de Balzac.
