Ford's rivals are sending similar signals. Chrysler is coming out with a diesel Jeep Liberty this summer, equipped with a four-cylinder 2.8-liter engine that the company claims will perform like a V6, with a 25% improvement in fuel economy (it will be sold in only 45 states because of antismog restrictions on diesel passenger vehicles). Lexus plans to deliver a hybrid version of its luxury RX330 SUV, the 400h, this fall. And Honda says by year's end it will sell a hybrid edition of its V6 Accord that will outperform the standard version in fuel economy...
...himself from his own driveway: "The family has it. I don't have it." It was a far different story, however, when Kerry visited car-loving Detroit last February. Back then, he exulted to local reporters about how much horsepower he commands: "We have some SUVs. We have a Jeep. We have a couple of Chrysler minivans. We have a PT Cruiser up in Boston. I have an old Dodge 600 ... We also have a Chevy, a big Suburban...
From inside the Gandhi SUV, there's little sign of looming disaster. Sonia, 57, is sitting up front; her children Rahul, 33, and Priyanka, 32, are behind, and all three are beaming out at a crush of villagers who envelop the silver jeep and whose faces and skinny bodies are sliding across its windows like a human car wash. Sonia opens her door to stand on the sill, and the crowd shrieks and surges forward, a hundred arms straining for a supplicatory touch of her feet. Priyanka waves, and a tight knot of some 100 hands waves back. Rahul opens...

Two of the great animals then wheeled about and gave chase in a surprising burst of speed. The bigger of the two got within trunk-swiping distance of our jeep as we cowered and shouted. Fortunately, the track flattened out and we were able to floor it, to a chorus of furious trumpeting. Later I asked Premaratna if we had been in any real danger. "I know of men who have been closer to an angry wild elephant. But none...
...SNAFU movies also addressed nostalgia for "The Home Front" (Tashlin, November 43). SNAFU is shivering in an outpost where "It's so cold, it would freeze the nuts off a Jeep," thinking enviously of the folks who have it easy back in the States - except that his girl friend has joined the WACs, grandpa is shooting rivets onto a battleship and mom is farming harder than Renee Zellweger in "Cold Mountain." And a couple of SNAFUs, including "Private SNAFU vs. Malaria Mike" (Jones, March 44), revived Geisel's Flit villain, the mosquito, to advise soldiers in the South Pacific...
