The potent Jersey Journal has raked him with editorial criticism. Chief exhorter against him has been one James Burkitt, a rangy Alabaman and self-styled "Jeffersonian Democrat." Not a candidate himself, "Jeff" Burkitt sought to "sell good government" to Jersey City.
