Your excerpt from Jeffrey D. Sachs' book on how to end global poverty [March 14] brought me to tears of outrage and sorrow over the tragic plight of the world's poorest. But I was saddened even more by the stinginess and lack of empathy that the U.S. has continually shown. For all the talk about Christian values, the U.S. has failed dismally to respond to the desperate needs of the poorest of Christ's brethren by being the most tightfisted among the rich donor nations.
