Writer-director John Milius claims to be fascinated by men who are legends in their own time. The 29-year-old Californian also wrote the screenplays for Jeremiah Johnson and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean. He tries to make criminals cult heros, but we are left with no sense of the history or development of the legend. We don't know why the man is a legend and, indeed, don't believe we are watching his story. We disbelieve for several reasons...
...thin line between 'interest' and 'fad.' Four years ago, when black-fiction was "in", one could have expected droves of chic radicals enrolling in a five-day seminar catchily titled, Black Rage, from Little Rock to Black Panthers. Today only a handful of devotees remain, like Jeremiah Sheehy who believes that "black fiction is more relevant to my life than China." For many, then, A.C. may represent a sophisticated 'prep school' for cocktail circuits. That many adopt a faddist topic was underscored by an appalling inarticulateness among the participants of the Cinga session in expressing their interest for the subject...
IONCE had a theory that country music was invented by AM-rock songwriters to make their product sound intelligent by comparison. After all, not even "Jeremiah was a bullfrog..." would find Tammy Wynette a hard act to follow. And if lyrics like "I beg your pardon,/ I never promised you a rosegarden..." wouldn't send you begging for a copy of James Brown's "Hot Pants," it's doubtful that anything would. Good country music has largely been a triumph of performance over material, and there is no question that any first-rate country guitarist, fiddler, or banjo player could...
Native Israelis take almost as much delight as the tourists do in the contrasts and paradoxes of their extraordinary homeland. Lod was a fortified city in the days of Joshua; its motto is taken from the prophet Jeremiah: "Thy children shall come again to their own border." At the site of this ancient citadel, giant jetliners today disgorge joyous refugees from the Soviet Union, the source of the latest aliyah. Horse-drawn carts rattle through the streets of nearby Ramla, while Phantom and Skyhawk jets scream overhead. Beneath the Qumran caves, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, picnickers romp...
...women could see in him. Lorna Koski, as the woman scorned, strikes the most discordant note in the play. Unsuccessful at portraying Julia's passionate melodramatics, Koski appears to have lost not her decorum and good sense, but her wits. In contrast, the two fathers, played by Jeremiah Riemer and Peter Wirth, are delightfully comfortable in their roles, delivering their lines with spontaneous conviction. As the stupidly hapless doctor to whom Loenard conspires to marry off his adoring nuisance, Robert Stier is nearly perfect...
