...have just seen the most celebrated toppling of a wall since Joshua took Jericho. More than any other event, it symbolizes the rebirth of freedom in Eastern Europe. The amazing political changes in what used to be called the Soviet bloc raise questions about changes yet to come. Hasn't an economic barrier also fallen? Don't new opportunities beckon? Shouldn't Western business pioneers be packing their suitcases...
...this is only a partial register. Scores of additional works are listed under such disparate categories as the solar system, the meaning of the Greek myths, the shaping of England, the birth of the U.S. and secular explanations of the Old Testament: "If the Biblical account ((of Jericho)) is taken literally, this is a miracle, but . . . while the defenders watched in fascination at the slow parading about the city, and listened to the awesome sound of the trumpets, they might not have had time to see and hear the very mundane activity of Joshua's sappers slowly undermining the city...

The Jericho II "is a direct challenge to the Soviet Union," claimed Radio Moscow in its Hebrew- language broadcast. Responding to reports that an advanced version of the Jericho II might have a range of 900 miles...

"The Soviet Union itself knows it faces no danger from Israel," declared Foreign Minister Shimon Peres last week. Israeli officials privately spread the word that the Jericho II has a range of only 500 miles, which would mean it could strike Arab capitals but would fall short of Soviet territory. At the same time, however, it is believed that Israel is working on a longer-range version that would indeed bring the southern edge of the Soviet Union within its reach...
