Andrew Osborne's portrayal of the near-perfect jerk Shelley Levine also turned my head. Levine's voice booms at the most tactless moments, and he waves his cigar mercilessly at anyone within striking distance. Osborne turns lines meant simply for character development into some of the best lines in the show, and he interrupts Williamson and even himself frequently and flawlessly: "There's more than one man for the...Put a...wait a second, put a proven man out...and you watch, now wait a second--and you watch your dollar volumes." ...government spending, Simon is not afraid to call for defense cuts and more social programs. His program is straight from another era, when government provided for all strata of citizenry. His one troubling position--in favor of a balanced budget amendment--is hardly motivated by the platitudinous and knee-jerk reasons given by the other candidates who favor the amendment. Correctly, Simon observes that unbalanced budgets raise interest rates and in that way facilitate one of the largest income transfers--from poor to rich--supported by the Reagan administration. Faced with a case of the government exercising prior restraint, the press rushed to the defense of its first principles, attacking White's decision. Paradoxically, in this knee-jerk reaction, the press also forgot some of its first principles, for White was articulating a defense of autonomous control by newspaper owners, while Brennan hinted at an interpretation which would undermine the autonomy of the owners...
