...Independence pronounced "all men are created equal," a phrase that provided a central argument for ending slavery and bringing blacks into citizenship, and it still offers the best hope for conquering the doctrine of white supremacy. As unbelievable as it may seem to modern observers who have a knee-jerk sensitivity to signs of Jeffersonian hypocrisy, this language genuinely alarmed many of Jefferson's contemporaries. Even though Jefferson was a slaveholder, the sentiments in the Declaration, when added to his well-known antislavery stance and his support for the hierarchy-shattering French Revolution, made him seem a radical bent...

...Democratic Leadership Council is, famously, a centrist organization but, infamously, not a very moderate one. Al From created it in 1985 to transcend the smug, knee-jerk rigidity that overwhelmed the Dems after Vietnam. From was convinced that a new political deal was possible, that liberal ends could be achieved through conservative means. Fiscal responsibility (and free trade) could produce economic growth. The knee-jerk retort - What could be wrong with a system that's kept Australian teams at the peak of world cricket since the mid '90s? - is "simplistic," he says: the consequences of what's happening will soon reach the top, and dynasties can crumble. The West Indies were dominant in the '80s, but cricket there is now languishing, as it is to varying degrees and for different reasons in England, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe...
