Sometimes, it seems as if the constant assembly line of formulaic, big-budget, "blockbuster" films that Hollywood churns out with monotonous regularity has trained its audience only too well. Certain keywords, such as "family comedy," '"heart-stop-ping suspense," and tear jerker romance" will produce an almost Pavlovian response in the prospective audience. Probably any experienced moviegoer can summarize the entire plot of a two hour film after seeing only the 45 second preview. Such are the movies of the Nineties...
Even if this sort of scene is off-putting, or you've seen too many Merchant-Ivory productions lately, you may want to give "Shadowlands" a try anyway; it's less a period piece than a contemporary tear-jerker. Debra Winger's role here is uncannily similar to the one she had in "Terms of Endearment." And once again, I cried from the moment she becomes sick until the end of the movie and loved every minute...
Imagine the playground possibilities for ostracism. No longer will dodge ball be the sole determinant of power. Now sugar will separate the strong from the meek: woe to the first-grader who can't stomach a tear Jerker...
