Most undergraduates who miss classes today will be people who have yet to buy notebooks for the second semester, or those whose instinctual reaction to the words "union" and "strike" is "support the demands." In the "Us Against Them" world of students, faculty and administrators, this knee-jerk reaction is understandable. Beneath the surface, however, the purported convergence of interest between graduate students and undergraduates is an uncertain proposition...
...Jerk. Patiently, she walks the owners through her routine. First comes an equipment check: a 4-ft. smooth leather leash and a large-link choke collar. She shows the owners how the collar works: a downward jerk on the leash tightens it without choking the dog; release slackens the collar immediately. Next, each dog is paraded into the front of the class to show the owners that simple commands ("Heel," "Sit," "Stay") can be taught in five minutes. ...start of the meeting never deters Dunlop from continuing his performance. While Bok plays the somber straight man, next to him Dunlop slouches in his chair, scowls disdainfully in the direction of his ever diminishing number of adversaries, only to jerk upright in paroxysms of laughter when his side scores a point. At a meeting last fall, he and Bok disagreed over a bit of financial minutia, and when evidence corroborating his position came forth from the audience, he lurched forward chuckling, his finger waggling at the somewhat taken aback Bok. ...rate, young Whalen is an ex-junky, an inept lecher, and a petulant, sadistic jerk. Even such a figure might conceivably be observed to good effect, but Kosinski perceives nothing of unusual interest in the homunculus he has created. A succession of brief, turgid scenes demonstrates Whalen's emptiness, a quality that is never in doubt; nothing in the book offers any insight into the author's reasons for pursuing such an unrewarding project. One of Kosinski's few gestures toward literary excellence amounts to a stylistic tic: his repeated use of Grim Bits from Mother Nature...
