...long as Brautigan stays light his talent for whimsy can carry him along. But when the jester feels it necessary to make a serious point his pretentiousness and predictability are unbearable. He stretches a tasteless metaphor about a 24-hour pig slaughter house into the five paragraph "A Complete History of Germany and Japan." In another piece Brautigan sits in a Times Square movie house next to a cliched man, "fat, about fifty years old, balding sort of and his face was completely minus any human sensitivity." Brautigan compares him to a dog in the cartoon. Not only...
...evening crouched on all fours-no easy trick, I would suspect-while also managing to inject a certain amount of pathos in his position as the dumb mutant whose momentary aspirations only serve to force him lower to the earth. And all the while, Richard Kravitz, playing the jester Trinculo, and W. C. Fuller as the drunken Stephano, contributed a number of nice comic bits without, thankfully, appearing to strain for the laughs...

This parody of the wedding hymn, necessary to maintain the exaggerated acting...
Except for one article set in type large enough for the elderly, the Spring Issue's lay-out is attractive, with competent art work throughout. The colorful cover picture of the Jester hanging outside the Lampoon castle is a particularly fine display of Lampoon graphics. Jeffrey M. Lowenfals, the new head of the business board, brought in a lot of juicy ads and proved his sense of taste by running an advertisement for dildos...
