When Christ said 'If you wish to be perfect, come and follow Me,' did He mean by 'you' only persons of Caucasian ancestry?" So the Rev. Claude H. Heit-haus, S.J., of Marquette University angrily asks in the current issue of the Jesuit weekly America. Professor Heithaus had recently read that 17 diocesan seminaries, 52 religious seminaries and 25 congregations of nuns of the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. are now accepting Negro candidates. That reminded him that there are 47 Roman Catholic diocesan seminaries, 285 religious seminaries and 209 congregations of nuns still unaccounted...
Short of Ideal. Scientist Murdock's challenge got a quick answer. The Rev. William J. Gibbons, of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, rose to the defense of premarital chastity. In Rome, Jesuit Father Riccardo Lombardi, who has carried his ardent revivalist "Crusade of Love" across the land (TIME, Dec. 20, 1948), cried: "The mighty of this world, the ecclesiastical and civil authorities, must do something for those who cannot wait because hunger gnaws at their vitals...
...lake-island in Yorkshire, and had even fought off Oliver Cromwell with swivel guns and muskets. It was no wonder, then, that when Charles, 2yth Lord of Walton, grafted a mad passion for wild life onto the old family root of religious fervor, the resulting bloom resembled a Jesuit seminary disguised as a bird sanctuary...
