Your piece on Joseph's relationship with Jesus, "Father and Child," was timely [Dec. 19]. Joseph plays a great role in the season of Christmas and in Jesus' family. I am grateful for the article. In contemplating Joseph's role, you quoted author Jerry Jenkins, who got it just right: "We can make him work for whatever we want him to work for, as long as we stay within the intent of Scripture." Let us explore Joseph's hidden virtues. RAMON C. SANTOS JR. Pasig City, the Philippines...

...christian who believes in the miraculous birth of Jesus, I have deep respect and affection for Joseph and Mary. Their lives were sacrificial and worthy of their great calling. Nevertheless, by focusing on speculations and possibilities about those two worthies, people lose sight of the fact that there is only one King of Kings, and that is Jesus Christ. I believe Joseph and Mary would be the first to cry, "Enough! Worship Jesus." FRAN WHEELER Knoxville, Tenn...

By the way, I am a heterosexual mother of five children and grandmother of six. Charline Kennedy Orlando, Florida, U.S. I am sorry about the Pope's rules...

...give in one area without taking away elsewhere. In this case, the loser is baptism--or at least the rite's broadest, bluntest definition. Limbo was conceived in the Middle Ages to solve a problem relating to original sin, the inherited stain of Adam and Eve's disobedience. Jesus' death on the Cross is understood to have relieved humanity of the burden of that sin, an immunity Catholicism still considers activated for each human as he or she unites with Christ in baptism...

KING PREACHED "THE DRUM MAJOR INSTINCT" AT Ebenezer that Sunday, Feb. 4. He freely adapted a sermon published under that title during his seminary years by evangelist J. Wallace Hamilton, based on the biblical story of two disciples who beseech Jesus for the most prominent eternal seats in heaven. Their desire springs from a universal impulse for distinction, said King--"this quest for recognition ... this drum major instinct." An extreme drum major "ends by trying to push others down to push himself up," he warned, driving racism in culture and arrogance in nations. Yet Jesus in the Bible account does...
