Religious believers often cite feeling God's presence as proof of his existence. Now people point to Teresa's lack of feeling the presence of Jesus as proof of God's existence. These people note her courage in persevering despite severe doubts. If she had been even more courageous, she would have admitted she was an atheist. Helping the poor without a belief in a heavenly reward is one of the greatest aspects of secular humanism. August Berkshire, MINNEAPOLIS...

...have bought his line anyway. He's also an ad-lib adept. When one clutch of Catholic protesters recites the Our Father and Hail, Mary aloud during a rally, Moore asks them, "You're not gonna do the whole rosary, are ya?" and then the more pertinent, "What did Jesus bomb?" The movie leaves little doubt that if Kerry had been half the campaigner Moore is, he'd be in the White House, not the political outhouse, today...

...pastor and servant of Jesus Christ, I had a strong response to the exposé. It is unbelievable that the Roman Catholic Church would not respect Teresa's wishes to keep her struggles confidential. In my 30 years of serving, I have had many similar crises of faith. They are a normal part of the ministry and reflect the human condition. The Bible says "The just shall live by faith," not feelings. Jesus said he would never forsake those who are his. He did not say they would feel his presence. Feelings and emotions last only as long as everything else on this earth. God's word, faith, hope and love last forever. Brian Watson, Brisbane, Queensland...

Proceed with caution here, of course. Every religion is full of doctrines and beliefs that may seem nutty to outsiders. Jesus could be seen as a snake-oil salesman if you don't buy the snake oil. Weisberg says Mormonism is different because it is so "recent," involving miraculous events in the 19th century in upstate New York. Well, I dunno. The patina of age may explain why Jesus' walking on water is easier to believe than Smith's golden plates and magic glasses. But it doesn't go far in justifying the distinction. For me, any candidate who believes...
