Power at a Price. The V.N.A.F. has developed into an organization of 1,000 pilots, 15,000 other officers and men and 400 planes. In its latest upgrading, the V.N.A.F is turning in propeller-driven A-1 Skyraiders for twin-engine A-37 jet attack planes. The 524th, or Thien-Loi (Thunder) Squadron recently went operational in A-37s at Nha Trang airbase, and two more squadrons of the jets will be flying by year...

After nearly two years, Nigerians and rebellious Biafrans are close to stalemate. Nigerian troops are liberally supplied by both the British and the Russians with jet planes, mortars, armored cars and guns; but up to now they have often used the equipment like dilettantes. The outgunned, outmanned Biafrans have retreated to advantageously familiar home ground, and receive French arms by air. On their northeastern front, the Nigerians are largely in control. In the southeast, the Biafrans have 3,000 Nigerian soldiers encircled at Owerri but lack strength to wipe out the pocket and push south toward the oil town...

Better Focus. To obtain their proof, Stephen Little of the University of Texas and Astronomer Ronald Schorn of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory turned to the same kind of tools that they and other scientists had previously used in attempts to detect Martian water: the telescope and the spectrograph, which breaks light into its rainbow (spectrum) of colors and records it on a photographic plate. With the aid of a $100,000 NASA grant, mirrors had just been refinished on the 82-in. McDonald telescope, bettering its focusing by a factor of three. The optics of the spectrograph had also been...

Last week, after 19 years, the U.S. showed how far it has developed the ability to rush crack troops to the scene of a crisis. Giant four-jet C-141 StarLifters flew some 700 men of the 82nd Airborne Division-part of a larger airlifted force-8,500 miles from Fort Bragg, N.C., with two refueling stops, to parachute-drop zones near Seoul in 55 hours. But for heavy snowstorms in South Korea, which forced a 24-hour postponement of the parachute jump, the operation would have taken barely more than...

What is also at stake is the U.S.'s long domination of the global market for commercial aircraft. Seven out of ten of the transports now in operation, piston or jet, are U.S. built, and have earned billions of dollars in foreign exchange. But such dominance will continue only so long as U.S.-built ships are faster and more efficient than anyone else's. U.S. aviation was in this critical condition once before, when Britain's ill-fated Comet series beat U.S. jets to the skies by nine years. After the Comet tragically failed, the U.S. easily...
