...after a journey of 18 months, a tiny visitor from earth streaked precariously close to the giant of the solar system, penetrating deep into Jupiter's powerful magnetic field and coming within 278,000 km (172,400 miles) of the Jovian cloud tops. Back at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Lab, controllers waited breathlessly to see whether the plucky robot would survive that dangerous encounter. But even before Voyager 1 made its closest approach on Monday, the 826 kg (1,820 lb.) unmanned spacecraft sent home a trove of new findings about Jupiter, including evidence that its atmosphere...
...this technological gambit succeeds, the $400 million project has already provided rich scientific dividends. Even before the drum-shaped spacecraft's first brush with the so-called bow shock region, where the Jovian magnetic field traps the solar wind, Voyager's sensitive instruments picked up a bewildering jet stream of frozen ammonia apparently traveling at 560 km (350 miles) per hour above the planet's clouds. Voyager also discovered a dazzling, doughnut-shaped cloud of electrically charged particles that formed displays similar to the earth's northern lights...
...last week staged their first diplomatic extravaganza: the welcoming to Tehran of Palestine Liberation Organization Leader Yasser Arafat. The P.L.O. trained many of Khomeini's fighters, and Arafat was anxious to cash in on the debt. Hailing the obvious, Arafat happily declared after his arrival on a Syrian jet that Khomeini's triumph had "turned upside down" the Middle East political equations (see following story). Despite Arafat's euphoria-"Today Iran, tomorrow Palestine," he declared at a news conference-his hosts seemed to be as eager to use Arafat as he was to use them...
...extradition "until there is no place he can go except for Israel or South Africa." Indeed, the Shah's sojourn in Morocco may soon end. Last week his host, King Hassan II, formally recognized the Bazargan government. The crew of the Shah's royal 707 jet flew the plane, complete with its gold-plated bathroom fixtures, back to Iran. "If anyone offers you a job, take it," the gloomy monarch reportedly advised his dwindling entourage last week...
...stepped off a jet at Washington's Andrews Air Force Base and embraced his mother and his fiancee while his three beaming sisters looked on. Then, as a band launched into the Marines' Hymn, Sergeant Kenneth Kraus drew his 5-ft. 6-in. frame to proud attention. Navy Secretary W. Graham Claytor pinned the Navy Commendation Medal on his chest, and the Marine commandant, General Louis Wilson, awarded him a Purple Heart. Said Claytor: "You acted like a Marine should, and that's the finest thing...
