Marvel produced three benefit books, two of which use their characters to greater and lesser degrees. "The Amazing Spider-Man" #36 ($2.25; 32pp.), with an unusual jet-black cover, folds the WTC disaster into the continuity of the Marvel "universe," which uses New York as the home base for many of its characters. It is of little interest to anyone but collectors. "Heroes," ($3.50; 64pp.), a rapid-response poster book, came out a month and half after the disaster and has now gone into a third printing. It consists entirely of tableaus and portraits by Marvel's top talent past...

...will seek to break backed by an association of disparate supporters. Blanc will also rely on his usual mix of hard work, determination - and occasional astonishing luck. In 1994, as he negotiated with hijackers of an Air France plane, Blanc narrowly missed being shot when the terrorists sprayed his jet with gunfire. ...Balancing Zippy's non-sequiturs falls to Griffy, the high-collared ultra-rationalist. He commonly expounds on topics ranging from the pleasures of snowfall, to the ancient continent of Pangea and the fleeting celebrity of N'Sync. His barbed commentary on actual trends, such as jet skis or the infantilization of men's fashion, will come as a shock to readers more used to the toothless "humor" of placating, status quo strips like "Beetle Bailey." What a relief to find no punch line. Griffith has actually made room for essays and meditations on the "funnies" page...
