...plot. De Funès appears as a racist bourgeois, a prideful Catholic preparing for his daughter's wedding. His chauffeur, who is Jewish, has relatives arriving from New York. There is a car accident, but the chauffeur refuses to help, since it is after sun down Friday-the start of the Sabbath, when Orthodox Jews do not work-so De Funès must extricate himself all on his own. Meanwhile, near the crash scene a gang of Middle Eastern terrorists chases after one of their political leaders, trying to torture information about the underground...

...identify Maine's William Cohen as the son of "a Jewish baker and an Irish mother," implying that a religious identity is one and the same as an identity of national origin. I would not wish to nitpick over a matter of semantics, but this sort of writing could lead to some interesting analogies: Richard M. Nixon, son of a Quaker mother and an American father; Barry Goldwater, son of a Jewish merchant and an American mother; Lyndon B. Johnson, son of a Protestant mother and an American farmer; John Kennedy, son of a Catholic mother and an American...

...kind of artistic genius who falls outside of all high-brow categories. Bruce was a great stand-up comic, a vital master of the "spritz." But the "spritz" belongs in what is called "popular culture"; it is urban folk art. Bruce is an urban American primitive, a Jewish Leadbelly. And besides Goldman such folk art hasn't yet enlisted too many serious students. Goldman has staked out a new region that promises to be a "field of the future" among scholars and critics. Through his magazine articles and essays on jazz, rock and sick, black and Jewish comics...

...very fine study of working class women in America entitled Absent from the Majority has recently been published under the auspices of the American Jewish Committee. Its author, Nancy Seifer, brings to light a set of figures which ought to be general knowledge. Women now comprise 40 per cent of the labor force. One third of all working women are the only bread-winners in their households; another 8 per cent are the major ones. And as of 1870, seven-eighths of all women who held jobs were working simply to make ends meet...
