...latest clashes between Israelis and Palestinians have offered a good pretext. In a TIME interview at his fortified office in Beirut's southern suburbs, Hizballah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah made it clear that the group's political aims in Lebanon have become secondary to the regional jihad to free Jerusalem from Israeli occupation. "There is no doubt that our most important role is in the region," he explained. "We have experience, and we are ready to help. All means must be used to help the Palestinians." U.S. officials contend that Hizballah is training radical Palestinian factions for terrorist operations...
American Intelligence Agencies now strongly suspect that the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a Cairo-based extremist group that is part of OSAMA BIN LADEN's loose network, may have carried out the Oct. 12 attack in Yemen on the U.S.S. Cole. But unless the Yemeni regime allows the FBI access to witnesses and suspects, that may never be proved. The Yemenis are refusing to let U.S. agents join Yemeni authorities in conducting interviews. On Friday FBI Director Louis Freeh and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright appealed to President Ali Abdullah Saleh to let FBI agents "work as partners" with Yemeni cops...

But Hamas activists deny they are coordinating their terror campaigns with Arafat. "Are you crazy?" says a Hamas leader, indicating that Arafat is far too moderate for the ends Hamas has in mind. The group's radical agenda has put it on a collision course with the moustarabine units. A Hamas operative explained last week that his men try to be extra vigilant...
...Palestinians have their own brand of covert operations too. Israeli and Palestinian security sources believe that Hamas bombers are planning attacks against Israel. An Islamic Jihad activist blew himself up near an Israeli outpost in Gaza last week...
...Israeli defense minister Ephraim Sneh immediately blamed the Palestinian Authority for the attack, attributing it to the release in recent weeks of scores of Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants from Arafat's jails. The attack will sharpen the political dilemma posed by the latest cease-fire for Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Israel had begun withdrawing some of its tanks from the outskirts of Palestinian neighborhoods Thursday, and Arafat's police were seen breaking up demonstrations around Israeli checkpoints following the agreement to try and curb the violence that has claimed 173 lives over the past five weeks...
