...first half of Pineda's story isn't unique - Filipino cover bands are ubiquitous in many Asian cities. It's a phenomenon Manila-based PhilMusic.com founder Jim Ayson attributes to an imbalance in supply and demand. "There are more musicians in the Philippines than there are opportunities," says Ayson, a drummer who knew Pineda in the 1980s. But Pineda's rags-to-riches story is giving new hope to Filipino singers. "A lot of singers here tried to make it in the States and they couldn't," he says. "[Pineda] made...

...July 2002, the office of the Pentagon's former top lawyer, William "Jim" Haynes, began to examine a program that taught U.S. military personnel how to survive interrogation methods used by dictatorships such as North Korea and the former Soviet Union. The program, know as SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape), was designed to prepare U.S. personnel to face techniques such as sensory deprivation, sleep disruption, being forced into stress positions and even "waterboarding." That means Obama will be considering choices like Ohio governor Ted Strickland (though Strickland says he would turn down the offer) or one of three possibilities from Virginia - Governor Tim Kaine, former governor Mark Warner or Senator Jim Webb. Or perhaps a Westerner like Montana governor Brian Schweitzer. McCain might get an Electoral College boost by picking Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, Pennsylvania's ex-governor Tom Ridge or former rival Mitt Romney, who has family roots in pivotal Michigan...

...Jim Webb served four years as a Marine officer, some of that time in Vietnam, following his education at the U.S. Naval Academy. He left the service in 1972 and later served as Ronald Reagan's Navy Secretary before being elected in 2006 as a Democratic Senator from Virginia. Webb, a prolific writer and author, is haunted by a 1979 article he wrote for Washingtonian magazine titled "Women Can't Fight." He has since disowned that position, but it's a safe bet Hillary Clinton loyalists - whom the Obama campaign needs to woo into its camp...
