That could well be a violation of irs rules that prohibit tax-exempt organizations from transferring assets to private individuals. It also calls into question Gingrich's claim that he's no Jim Wright--the Democratic Speaker whose ouster he spearheaded--because he never sought to line his own pockets. After taxes, his royalties would have stuffed his pockets with something like $300,000--the amount of his fine. Maybe he should hand it over. If nothing else, it would prove that even when you can't count on the rule of law in Washington, there's always poetic justice...
...problems. Only a deliberately modified scanner is likely to have picked up the Gingrich call and held it long enough to produce such a lengthy recording. And only a couple painfully aware of their action's consequences would have passed the tape on to House ethics committee member Jim McDermott accompanied by a letter asking for immunity from prosecution...
Roper is issued a regulation villain (Michael Wincott, whose menacing baritone was used to better effect in the recent Jim Jarmusch corpse opera Dead Man) and a girlfriend in peril (British stunner Carmen Ejogo). A shame the star wasn't given a character to play, witty dialogue to speak or clever plot twists to unravel. But though Roper is often at gunpoint, Murphy wasn't when he agreed to make Metro. In his bumpy tryst with filmgoers, how long will he make us wait for another Nutty Professor? How long until we can love Eddie again...
...Bears' only Super Bowl victory. The irony, if you looked for it, was as thick as the exhaust fumes from the ZZ Top motorcycle armada that hung in the poorly-ventilated stadium air. Eleven years ago, in this same Superdome, it was Ditka who coached a charismatic Jim McMahon-led Bears squad to a 46-10 Super Bowl rout over these same Patriots. But the NFL has changed. The little hiking minuteman is gone from the Patriots' helmets. McMahon, sans headband, is now a sideline-pacer for Green Bay. And Ditka, at 57, is five years a TV analyst...
...next twist comes with the identity of the Congressman; Republican leadership sources tell TIME they strongly suspect Jim McDermott, ranking Democrat on the ethics committee. A committee source, interviewed by TIME, claims to have overheard McDermott talking to a Florida couple, who insisted on giving him a package in person. House Republican leaders say they have learned that McDermott discussed the conference call with special counsel James Cole before any news of the call appeared in public. They insisted that the call had not violated any deal and quickly went on the offensive, charging that intentionally intercepting and taping private...
