Grizzle said he hopes Christians will leave the speeches asking, "Is [this] intellectually consistent? Does it jive with my world view...
...Early that year, PoP and Martin saw a video of five guys singing at Sea World. They were called the Backstreet Boys and they were good, Martin says, "but we were concerned that there were too many boy bands around." Jive, the Boys' label, pushed. PoP and Martin relented. And Backstreet flopped. We've Got It Goin' On, co-written by PoP, Martin and fellow songsmith Herbie Crichlow, got only to No. 69 on Billboard's U.S. chart. But Germany fell for the song, and bsb fever swept Europe. The Boys had an edge that bands like Boyzone didn...
...many ingredients - Brazilian spices, West African meat, European pop broth. Nascimento seems to view the world as his supermarket, throwing in his musical cart Portuguese fado, South African juju music and, of course, bossa nova rhythms from his native country. His first song popped and burbled with township jive, and the emotional high point was reached when Lo Borges (a peer of Nascimento's who hails from his home region of Minas Gerais) joined him on stage for a rendition of Nascimento's song "Para Lennon e McCartney," yet another tribute to the guiding spirit of the Beatles...
...pointless pseudo R&B and insufferable ballads of Millennium (cool drinking game: take a shot every time you can name the Millennium song that inspired a new album cut). Perhaps the only interesting thing about Black and Blue is its odd title (didn't you expect something like Jive-in' with the Homies?). The Boys prefer to leave its meaning ambiguous, perhaps because the label chose the title and they're as befuddled as we are, but the consensus is that the "black" refers to their transparent, futile attempts at hip-hop while the "blue" calls attention to their nauseating...
...Boys are changing, however slightly. The real stars of this album, however, are the marketers involved in pushing it. Besides Backstreet Boys, Jive Records has an all-star roster of pop performers including 'N Sync, Britney Spears and R. Kelly. All these acts have posted huge, headline-grabbing first-week sales this year. 'N Sync's album No Strings Attached, despite pans from the critics, sold 2.4 million copies in a single week, more than doubling the old industry benchmark. Now the folks at Jive are looking to top that with Backstreet...
