Canada: there is geography in her poems, and by inference she builds a tension around her expatriation. She mentions Canada again in her "Two Campers in Cloud Country," a what-I-did-last-summer-vacation-poem; her "Sleep in the Mojave Desert" harks to Joan Didion's feelings for the deserts of Southern California. One poem "On Deck" opens with "Midnight in the Mid-Atlantic," and in several of her poems the landscapes are interchangeably Massachusetts, Wales, and Ireland. Of the last of these "Wuthering Heights," the most remarkable as a poem, betrays here ambivalence to the wilderness most strongly...
Unfortunately, Sanasardo's protege choreographer and lead male dancer, Manuel Alum, was absent in these concerts; Jacques Patarozzi was an unsteady alternative in the "Footnotes" piece, but warmed up to a more constant and precise performance in "The Myth" and "Pain." Joan Lombardi, a firm, blue-skirted figure, added noteworthy strength and form to the selections. Yet even after all the refined play and posing, the bells chime and "Footnotes" blurs into gossip behind a water-colored fence. It's a Tom Sawyer delight...
...with innumerable flea-market stalls, 350 restaurant-cafes, a huge motorcycle rally, ice follies, fireworks, the Paris Opera Ballet and the Soviet Navy Chorus. The festival also featured what may well have been the year's best pop concert, with appearances by The Soft Machine and Singer Joan Baez. ...Israeli air-force helicopter, one passenger had good reason to be alarmed. Said Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who suffered a broken back in a 1964 plane crash: "I've been through this before. Fasten your seat belts." The order was unnecessary; the chopper carrying the Senator and wife Joan Kennedy to a meeting with Defense Minister Moshe Dayan made a safe emergency landing on a beach south of Tel Aviv, giving the Kennedys an opportunity to stroll around and collect sea shells. Said the unflustered Joan: "It's nice to have the unexpected privacy...
Naturally there were oodles of Kennedys. Eunice Kennedy Shriver looked ladylike in cerise taffeta by Cardin. Joan Kennedy, the wife of Senator Edward Kennedy, swirled by in lavender crepe slit to the tops of her thighs. But sitting two rows in front of Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy was an unlikely figure: an Australian girl in T shirt, blue jeans and bare feet. Having come to stare, she had been given a ticket by an unknown man. "Are you staying?" asked a bystander. "My God, yes!" she gasped, then padded dazedly to her choice seat...
