Radio Beacon. Further observations by Hewish and other radio astronomers soon put this tantalizing speculation to rest but eventually confirmed that a pulsar is a neutron star. Space, in fact, seems to be full of neutron stars. Since Hewish and his assistant, Jocelyn Bell, found the first one, about 100 more have been identified by astronomers. A neutron star is a bizarre object. It is formed when a giant star exhausts its nuclear fuel and collapses inward on itself, crushing much of its matter into a ball of neutrons some ten miles in diameter-but so dense that a thimbleful...

...radar experiment. In the mid-1960s, a Russian astronomer detected varying signals from a mysteri ous radio source; Tass breathlessly reported that the signals were a beacon from a supercivilization. The source was later identified as a distant, starlike quasar. When Cambridge Astronomer Anthony Hewish and his assistant Jocelyn Bell in 1967 recorded blips coming from space at precise intervals, they playfully named the sources LGMs (for Little Green Men) on the chance that they had detected the beacon of an advanced civilization. The LGMs were later named pulsars and recently identified as natural phenomena: the long-sought neutron stars...

...Jocelyn Herbert's production design creates a feeling of violent, boisterous squalor, and Gerry Fisher's camera work -like Nicolas Roeg's in Performance -is discreet but evocative. Of course, Mick gets to sing in both films. In Performance, he delivers a zesty composition of his own, called Memo from Turner, and in Ned Kelly, he gives us approximately 847 choruses of The Wild Colonial Boy. Jagger's best film role to date is still in Godard's One Plus One, where he can be seen doing what he does best: just singing...

During the cheerless eight months since he had to devalue the pound, words of praise for Harold Wilson have been as scarce as sunshine at his habitual Scilly Isles vacation spot. Merchant Banker Jocelyn Hambro recently called him the worst Prime Minister since Lord North, who presided over the loss of the American colonies. The public, which voted Tory in by-elections all winter and spring, earlier this month gave Wilson the lowest rating that Gallup pollsters have recorded for any Prime Minister since they began sampling in Neville Chamberlain...

Pulsars were first detected last sum mer, shortly after Cambridge University's Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory began using a new and highly sensitive radio telescope. Investigating the angular size of a quasar, a pigtailed, 24-year-old Irish graduate student named Jocelyn Bell noticed some strange, pulsating signals that were "so weak they were hard to pinpoint." Working in excited-secrecy, a Mullard Observatory team led by Astronomer Anthony Hewish began an intensive analysis of the pulsations...
