Take the rebel romanticism of Jodeci and the pleading sincerity of Boyz II Men, and add a dash of the martial-arts mythologizing of the Wu-Tang Clan. Let simmer, and you'd have something approximating the R.-and-B. vocal quartet Dru Hill. Dru Hill's vocal recipe doesn't always work--the group sometimes settles for flashy sentiment instead of striving for true emotion. Still, numbers like the thoughtful remake of The Love We Had (Stays on My Mind) and the delicately felt ballad Angel make this CD really cook...
...strongest performers of the night were 112, a southern R&B quartet with a mellow yet smooth sound, similar to that of Boyz II Men or Jodeci. Their harmonious singing left concertgoers wanting to hear more. The performance of their hit song "Cupid," complete with a shirtless group member playing the guitar, was the best song of the night--and the only one which displayed any significant amount of musical talent...
...Records decided that Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott was a hip-hop star. However, there was one problem. Outside of the relatively small demographic of people who pay close attention to the songwriting credits of R.-and-B. albums--Elliott has composed minor hits for such acts as Aaliyah, Ginuwine and Jodeci--hardly anybody had ever heard of her. Also, Elliott isn't your typical Top 40 sex siren. She has a regular, stocky body, the kind most people have unless they're members of a professional sports team or Keenen Ivory Wayan's all-woman house band. So the record company...
...crafted. They are often seductive but never raunchy, sweet through not saccharine, and are always on the right side of the fine line separating light-hearted from vacuous. Furthermore, the band is known primarily for the quality of its music, not its extracurricular reputation, unlike other groups such as Jodeci who rely on a playa-gangsta-mack image to sell-records...
...album of unconnected, though highly agreeable, songs. Who Can I Run To, the CD's best number, is so immediately likable you might swear you had heard it before (and you might be right--the song was originally performed by the Jones Girls in the '70s). While Jodeci's songs are often about male sexual pursuit, Xscape shows us things from the female perspective. Several of these songs are about women who have been wronged and yet foolishly go back to their men. On the ballad Love's a Funny Thing, the lyrics sound like a transcript from a Ricki...
