...great photo of governor Palin on this week's cover should scare the Democrats. You see a strong, intelligent, attractive and determined mien and an ideal partner for McCain, one who will help bring this country back to the position of strength it has occupied in the world. McCain's Choice I admire Joe Klein's attempt to find an honest reason for McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his Vice President, such as his "rebelliousness" or his devotion to the issue of abortion [Sept. 15]. However, Palin was chosen for only one reason: to get votes. McCain seems to think that Hillary Clinton supporters will support Palin's ultraconservative agenda just because of her gender. It seems a shame, therefore, that this same flexibility will not characterize the vice-presidential debate, in which Senator Joe Biden will face off against Governor Sarah Palin. Unlike its presidential counterpart, the much-anticipated Biden-Palin showdown will be constrained by a more restrictive format that leaves little time for questions or interactions between debaters. Even more troubling than the curtailed structure is that the McCain campaign has publicly...

...DiBella said. “My books are all swimming in the water.” Neighbors of the elderly woman heard alarms and rushed to her aid. “There was just black smoke pouring out of the apartment on the top stairs,” said Joe J. Mancini. Mancini said he and another resident broke down the victim’s door in an attempt to rescue her just before the fire department arrived. BARTLEY’S ABLAZE On Saturday morning, a fire broke out in the kitchen of Mr. Bartley’s Burger...
