...This 1947 drama, Miller's first stage success, centers on Joe Keller, a manufacturer who knowingly shipped defective airplane parts during World War II. (It's quintessential Miller, which means quintessential Ibsen: there's no real action, just reaction to the revelation of long-hidden secrets.) Miller's indictment of business ethics and portrait of a family in crisis can seem overwrought, but McBurney's solution is to go the playwright one better; his expressionistic devices imbue the play with tragic universality. The capable cast includes John Lithgow as Joe, Dianne Wiest as his wife, and Patrick Wilson...
...Democratic Tilt? We read Joe Klein's "The Obama Surge" in my English class [Oct. 20]. We had heard about Klein's bias toward the Democrats, but this column took it too far. There was not a single complimentary remark about McCain or a single negative one about Obama. Klein also noted that McCain seems awkward because of his physical impairments. ...will eagerly set it for him. Obama has a lot to choose from. Recently, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, no fan of his, compiled a catalog of promises and programs Obama has made during the campaign. Including documentary quotations, the list ran 85 pages. Obama recently told Time's Joe Klein that Job One is the unknowable task of patching and stabilizing the sinking economy, which makes sense because the power of this issue to shape the next presidency is absolute. The financial crisis has already changed Reagan Republicans into bank nationalizers almost overnight. Presidential-transition expert Paul Light calls...
