...30th minute, captain Andrew Lundquist collected a loose ball in midfield and sent a long ball into the right corner for freshman forward Mike Peller, whose cross found freshman midfielder Joey Smolen in front of the net, but Smolen's header was high...
...rest of the cast doesn't make up for Baldwin's shortcomings. Chris Penn portrays Baldwin's partner Duke Finnerty as a wasted Joe Pesci (annoying accent and all), and Gina Gershon as girlfriend Joey is one-dimensional at best. It just seems like nobody tried very hard to make this film. One Tough Cop might have passed as a mediocre episode of "NYPD Blue," but it ultimately fails as a feature film...
...Frank Sinatra and his cronies Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop established a form of bourgeois hedonism that once again, since Sinatra's recent death, has become an object of fascination. Unfortunately, the timing of the film is the best thing about it. Despite some flashes of style, particularly in set design, it's an oddly dutiful account of Sinatra's life during this period. Additionally, some of the symbolism inherent...
Part of what makes this development so compelling is the very effective performance of Natasha Gregson Wagner as Sissel. She brings a wonderfully devilish aspect to her character when she wishes to warm up to Joey, a quality that is polite and playful at the same time it is slyly calculated. And possibly even better is her withdrawal, acted with a cool removal and detachment from her surroundings that translates both mentally and emotionally. Giovanni Ribisi is good as the young Joey, but probably more so because of Peretz's and Ryan's adaptation of the story than anything else...
