...wheels, chemin de fer and blackjack were going full tilt. At one table a gambler toyed with $1,200 worth of chips; hovering over the dice was a Sidney Greenstreet character who, they said, picked up $29,000 at the tables a few weeks ago. Former Light-Heavyweight Champ Joey Maxim was guarding the door. "Can't drink," he mumbled. "I'm watching for hustling broads and big-time gamblers." Cannes? Monte Carlo? Vegas? Not quite. Freeport, in tiny Grand Bahama Island, is not even marked on many maps. Yet Freeport boosters already call it the Riviera...
...season will not be fully under way for eight more months, the casualty list released last week showed that roughly 25 shows are already condemned. Sing Along fans will have to warble commercials next year; NBC has dismissed Maestro Mitch and the gang. "Once in a while," says Joey, "you get locked so deep in the tube that nobody on the beach can see you, and if a guy were just behind you, he'd get totally wiped out. You are so far back inside the wave that it breaks right over your head and around your body...
...eyes, once said: "Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid." The new generation ignores the dictum. They all want to act, or try to. Susan Kohner, Natalie Wood, Tippi Hedren, Carol Lynley, Jane Fonda,Ruta Lee, Christine Kaufmann, Joey Heatherton-all are aflame with Strasberg and Stanislavsky. But as bombshells they are squibs, containing the equivalent of about ¼ oz. of T.N.T...
