Among the most interesting of the songs that are being rehearsed this year are the "Dirge For Two Veterans", by Holst; "Choeur de Soldats", from Johann Straus operetta "La Reine Indigo"; "Der Ganz am Liebchen", by Brahms; and the exciting opening scene from Verdi's "Othello." Familiar pieces such as several choruses from the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas "Patience" and "The Mikado", and "My Spirit Be Joyful" from Bach's 146 Cantate will also be performed...
...Nature, commissioned by Rockefeller Center, Inc., as part of their program for sculptural and fresco decorations in Rockefeller Center's slab-sided skyscrapers, stocky, bob-haired Sculptor Milles had worked for three years. Milles got the idea for his singing statue from a line by German Poet Johann Gottfried Seume: "Where song is, pause and listen; evil people have no song." Taking three huge blocks of north Michigan pine, each made by pressing planks together like a gigantic piece of plywood, Carl Milles carved the biggest one into his medieval-looking horseman and tree. From the other blocks...
...Arts put the whole Chrysler collection on exhibition, and 989 art lovers including Richmond's floweriest socialites went to look. To do right by the occasion, Collector Chrysler chartered a private railroad car, arrived in Richmond with 58 convivial friends. While a 15-piece orchestra played waltzes by Johann Strauss, Mr. Chrysler and friends leaped joyfully up the Museum's wide staircases to his very own art show...
Bach: Piano Pieces (Pianist Grace Castagnetta; Victor; 8 sides) and The Life and Times of Johann Sebastian Bach (a book) by Hendrik Willem van Loon (Simon and Schuster). A new stunt in packaging: the two items, by a pair who have collaborated in other musico-literary ventures, sell for $5 boxed. Miss Castagnetta plays the music not too warmly. Mr. van Loon is probably the off-dashing-est of Bach's many biographers (best: Julius August Philipp Spitta, 19th Century German scholar; Dr. Albert Schweitzer, organist and missionary in Africa), illustrates the mighty J. S.'s life with...
Containing everything from the Pierian well water of Johann Sebastian Bach to the violet-bordered stream of Schubert's Ave Maria, Fantasia is a long succession of very large orders. Some of these orders (the flower, fish and mushroom dances of the Nutcracker Suite, the hulking, saurian epic of Stravinsky's Rite, the eerie, fantastic Night on Bald Mountain) are so beautifully filled that they may leave callous critics whispering incredulously to themselves. Others (Mickey's Sorcerer's Apprentice, the hilarious ostrich and hippopotamus ballets) set a new high in Disney animal muggery. Others (the wave...
