...that explains not only why Obama lost Pennsylvania, but why he continues to have difficulty connecting with working-class Democrats. As an Obama supporter who was first drawn to him by his desire to transcend "gutter politics" and those who practice them, I don't want to see him join so many other politicians, including the Clintons, there. However, after reading your insights and analysis, I see that he must. When I saw Clinton sipping (not downing) that shot of Crown Royal, I likened it to Michael Dukakis in the tank and thought it would have a similar effect. Alas...

Israel, Then and Now Thank you for your article "The First 60 Years" [May 5]. I cannot join those who will be celebrating Israel's 60th birthday and its accomplishments since May 14, 1948. Like many Israelis and Palestinians, I have pressing concerns about Israel's future, stability and security, and whether there are prospects for peaceful coexistence for Palestinians and Israelis. I believe there are, but not until there is meaningful resolution on the issues of the dispossession of Palestinian property and the dislocation of Palestinians after independence. ...Druze are legendary for their ferocity in defending their traditional mountain stronghold in the Chouf. It was reported that some Druze supporters of the Hizballah coalition even switched sides in the battles to join Jumblatt's men against the Shi'ites of Hizballah - politics suddenly taking a backseat to deeper feelings of loyalty to the clan and sect and unity against the outsider. "We are believers in peace and co-existence, but we will not accept any aggression against us," said Shawki Zeidan, a veteran Druze militia commander who led some 300 fighters against Hizballah on a 6,000-foot...

...Until recently, Serbia's politics amounted to a pretty even match between pro-European moderates who wanted Serbia to join the E.U. and nationalists who wanted closer ties with Russia. Kosovo's declaration of independence tipped the balance in favor of the nationalists. Some 60% of Serbs say they want to join the E.U., but that number drops below 45% if they are told the price of E.U. entry is the loss of Kosovo. The ultranationalist Serbian Radical Party - which once advocated union with Russia and Belarus, and is now tied for first place with a coalition of more...

...Poisoned Atmosphere The outcome of the elections could spell the end of Serbia's European dreams. Moderate voices are in retreat. The centrist president Boris Tadic, who publicly endorsed a "stabilization" agreement aimed at starting negotiations to join the E.U, has become the subject of a hate campaign. After the signing of the E.U. agreement, the nationalist tabloid Kurir carried a photo of Tadic and a colleague toasting the deal under the headline "Serbian Pigs Rejoice! They Gave Away Kosovo!" Tadic reportedly received a letter recently accusing him of "treason" and promising him "a bullet in the forehead." Authorities...
