...from Tiny Tim's wedding to Miss Vicki to Michael Landon's poignant last appearance to discuss his terminal cancer. But mostly the show has succeeded because of its cozy familiarity. Critic Kenneth Tynan once suggested that during the turbulent 1960s, Carson may have become "the nation's chosen joker because, in Madison Avenue terms, he was guaranteed to relieve nervous strain and anxiety more swiftly and safely (ask your doctor) than any competing brand of wag." A bit overstated, perhaps, but it is true that TV never devised a better bedtime companion...

...wall humorous pieces miss their mark. But such works as Drew Friedman's "Laugh Makers," in which Shemp Howard, "Ugliest Man in Hollywood," has "His pick amongst a virtual smorgasbord of Tinsel-town starlets"; and Daniel Clowe's "The Laffin' Spittin' Man," in which a practical joker commits suicide with a toy gun, are darkly hilarious...

...this end, there is plenty of high-tech destruction and gratuitous violence. But it is violence of a slightly different sort; darkly comical, Robocop II's well engineered mayhem bears more of a resemblence to the black satire of death orchestrated by the Joker in Batman than to the senseless slaughter in Total Recall or the recent series of Rambo movies...
