TIME's comment that Maimonides was a "philosopher who symbolizes a confluence of four cultures: Greco-Roman, Arab, Jewish and Western" ignores Maimonides' own description of himself. In a letter to Rabbi Jonathan HaKohein of Luniel (Provence), Maimonides says, "Torah consecrated me to her before my birth . . . She is my true love, the wife of my youth.
